| Bob Crocker, our guest speaker last night at the Odney Club, has one big passion in life – pylons! This interest in the structure used for carrying electric cables above ground serves him well, and made his presentation on "Electricity and Our World" (a subject which might not sound too exciting), interesting, very engaging, completely understandable, and it held everyone's attention. We have already stopped using coal to produce power. Gas and oil will soon follow the same destiny, which means we have to find new ways of lighting and heating our world. Solar panels and wind turbines are two alternatives already in use. | Slough Power Station is a world leader when it comes to producing heat and energy from burning biomass, but isn't large enough yet to make an impact on a wider area. According to Bob there are three things that actually can save us from a life in darkness and cold – batteries, hydrogen and nuclear fission! However, even nuclear fission has its problems of pollution. The ideal solution for the future would be a nuclear fusion, a method that still needs massive research and development, but would also give us a clean by-product of water. Albert Einstein and his E=mc2 theory might not only have been ahead of time, but also on the right track! |
