A very special evening celebrating the life of Sir Nicholas Winton, was held in Rome on Friday 10th October 2025 in a truly special venue: the Sala della Protomoteca at the Campidoglio.

The British Embassador His Excellency Edward Llewellyn, Roberto Gualtieri (the Mayor of Rome), Nick Winton (son of Sir Nicholas) and President Maria Scavetta were invited to take part in this very special event, with around 100 guests.

Francesco Arezzo – President of Rotary International, also made an appearance by video recording which was greatly appreciated by all.

A Reuters journalist moderated the discussion and interviewed Nick Winton, the Mayor of Rome, and the British Ambassador.

It was a great honour and pleasure for Maria Scavetta to be invited as President of the Rotary Club of Maidenhead, Sir Nicholas Winton’s Rotary club. Maria  delivered the club’s warm greetings to the Rotary clubs of Roma, Roma Capitale, Roma Innovazione, Roma Polis and Roma Ovest.

Although the clubs are separated by distance, they are united by the same Rotary spirit – the desire to serve, to build peace, and to create lasting friendships across borders. Maria thanked the rotary clubs for their warm welcome and friendship and stated that "Together, we try our very best to embody the Rotary ideal of 'Service Above Self' ".

The Rotary Club of Maidenhead is especially proud of one of their former members, Sir Nicholas Winton, whose courage and compassion saved 669 children from Czechoslovakia before the Second World War. His example reminds us that even one Rotarian can make an extraordinary difference in the world.

Rotarians try to continue that same mission – to try and serve humanity with kindness, respect, and hope for a better future.
