An evening of ballet at Norden FarmThe Club's first social event this year introduced us to a magnificent production of the ballet Giselle, streamed from The Royal Opera House in London to Norden Farm in Maidenhead and 2000 other cinemas around the world.
The French composer Adolphe Adam's famous opus premiered in Paris in 1841 and was hailed as a great success, an opinion that still stands. |
Dark stories from local author |
Chills and thrills were on the menu at Rotary's evening meeting at the Odney Club on Monday, served by our guest speaker David Palin and his partner Sarah Mayhew. David, who was born in London and has lived in both Cookham and Maidenhead before he moved to Wokingham, is a master of dark psychological thrillers. To date he has had eleven books published and more are in the pipeline. He believes his interest in dark and mysterious things started in early childhood, inspired by Grimm's Fairy Tales and exotic tales told by his parents from their time growing up in India. |
Club welcomes local RotarianThank you Gareth Richards, President Elect from local Rotary Club Windsor St George, for joining us at our Monday lunchtime meeting.
It's always a pleasure to welcome fellow Rotarians, and President Maria Scavetta received a club banner to add to the Club's collection! The clubs also really benefit from exchanging, comparing and sharing experiences and ideas. |
A flying visit...Three very unusual guests made a much appreciated appearance at the Club's Monday meeting! The trio consisted of Bella, a pretty barn owl, Humber, a handsome tawny owl, and Buddy, a proud Harris hawk.
Thanks to Berkshire Birds of Prey, an organisation founded by Angela Norwood, we were able to not only admire the birds close up, but more importantly learn a lot about them. |
Trunks Across the Thames fundraiserAs part of their Centenary celebrations (1926–2026), Maidenhead Rotary Club has donated £1,300 to Thames Valley Hospice through the Trunks Across the Thames fundraising event.
Great minds think alike, as the Rotary Club of Maidenhead, the Rotary Club of Windsor and Eton and the Rotary Club of Windsor St George were present on the ‘adoption’ evening Thursday the 5th February 2026. All three Presidents met up to ‘pick up their baby elephants’ and take them back to their ‘homes’ where they will be painted and decorated in time for the Trunks across the Thames event later in the year. |
A busy Monday meeting!
Rotarian visitor from ReadingOur Club loves visits from other Rotarians! Quite often we are welcoming overseas visitors from as far away as India, USA or Australia. Anne Phillips, last Monday's guest, didn't have such a long way to travel. She came from Reading Matins, where she has been a member for the past 30+ years.
President Maria Scavetta handed over the Club's pennant as a memento of the occasion. We were all delighted to meet Anne and hope to see her among us again soon! |
50 years as a Rotarian! The Club's Quiz Master extraordinaire, Barry Thorne, made last Monday's business meeting very special by serving his fellow members celebratory drinks – all in aid of commemorating his 50 years of service as a Rotarian!
Half a century ago he became a member of a Rotary Club in South Africa. Due to his motley international career he was a member of a few different clubs before he finally landed in Maidenhead. Congratulations, cheers and thank you, Barry! |
