Theresa May has backed our club's scheme to honour NHS staff and ordinary members of the public in Maidenhead who have gone the extra mile during the Covid-19 crisis.
The Maidenhead MP and former prime minister has agreed to join the judging panel for the Maidenhead Rotary Club Covid-19 Heroes Awards, which aim to recognise those who went out of their way to help others during the first months of the crisis.
Nominations are being sought for people who live or work in Maidenhead and the surrounding area in five categories:
Everyone nominated will receive a Rotary Covid-19 Heroes certificate and a panel of judges will pick one exceptional individual from each category to receive a £100 prize.
Mrs May said: “I am very grateful to have been asked to be on the judging panel for the Maidenhead Rotary Club COVID-19 Heroes awards.
“This year has been difficult, but when difficulties arise, so do heroes and I am excited to see all the nominations which show the great efforts of the people of Maidenhead during the lockdown. So many people in our local community worked to help others during this time – and many are still doing so.
“I know there are already lots of submissions but please do keep them coming in. This is already shaping up to be a fantastic competition.”

The scheme is the idea of club president Mary Spinks, who had a 52-year career in nursing and is a former director of the Florence Nightingale Foundation. She said: “We’re delighted to have our MP Theresa May join us on the panel for a scheme that aims to recognise the outstanding efforts of local people.” She said: “Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdown presented all of us with unexpected and unprecedented problems which made everyday life so much harder. “So many people rose to those challenges - from NHS staff to care home and care workers, and ordinary people looking after vulnerable neighbours. Being a nurse I fully appreciate the stress of looking after severely ill patients in intensive care. |
“We in Rotary have huge respect for all their efforts and want the public to nominate those who went beyond the call of duty so they can be recognised and rewarded.”
Mary added: “We hope the public and health professionals will get behind our scheme and help with nominations. There are so many deserving people and it will be lovely to give some of them something extra in time for Christmas.”
Nominations can be made by email to [email protected] or by post to Rotary Heroes, Maidenhead Rotary Club, 2 Somerford Close, Maidenhead SL6 8EJ.
