Purple4Polio is a publicity campaign to promote Rotary International's programme to help free the world from polio, using mass bulb planting of purple crocus at key sites. In Maidenhead these are around all four of the Rotary signs beside the main roads leading into the town, at the Thicket Roundabout, Maidenhead Bridge, Braywick Road and Furze Platt, and will also be in local parks.
On Sunday 16th October the first bulb planting took place beside the Rotary sign at the Thicket Roundabout. Despite a delayed start due to heavy rain, a small group of volunteers organised by Eddie Clarke managed to plant over 1000 bulbs in a little over half an hour (the first of 5,000), before retiring to the pub for well-earned refreshment.
The Rotary Clubs of Maidenhead Thames and Maidenhead Bridge will also be planting 5,000 bulbs within the next few weeks.
Keep an eye open for patches of purple in the Spring!
