Young speakers from Holyport Academy, Newlands and Claires Court Schools met last Thursday in the Maidenhead Rotary Youth Speaks competition, held at Claires Court School. The judges described them as showing ’Amazing quality of thought and delivery.’
Nine teams of three students introduced and spoke on topics they chose themselves. In the four teams in the Intermediate category (11 to 13 age group) they spoke on Body Image, Identity, Sugar and Change. Choosing between the presentations was ‘incredibly difficult’ in the judges’ words, but the team from Claires Court was the winner. From the Seniors’ five teams (14 to 17 years of age), the audience heard the young people’s views on Space v Sea, Fiction, Procrastination, Media and Body Image, and Competition. The judges had even more of a problem selecting a winner, such was the standard set. The team from Newlands speaking on Fiction won the day. |
Brian Aldridge, Rotary organizer of the event said ‘It’s the best competition, with the most teams that we’ve seen for years. All credit to the students and their schools.’ Both winning teams now go on to a Rotary District 1090 zone final, which is being held on Thursday January 28th at Liston Hall, Chapel Street, Marlow.
