ShelterBox was started as a millennium project by Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in Cornwall and has grown into the largest Rotary Club project in the world, with affiliates across the globe. ShelterBox and Rotary are project partners in disaster relief, providing an instant response to help thousands of people following disasters such as severe flooding or earthquakes, or conflict crises in countries such as Ukraine or Syria. Rotarian Greg Wilkinson from RC Reading Abbey is the ShelterBox's co-ordinator in the Thames Valley, and he came to talk to the club at the meeting on Monday 13 May. | His presentation of the charity's response to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and war zones was not only impressive but heartwarming. Their typical aid items are tents, tarpaulins, ropes, kitchen utensils, sanitary kits, blankets, water filters and sometimes cash. And solar lights, a remarkable invention which comes as a flat pack Ikea style and converts into a cube of light – with a charger for the mobile phone!
