Sir Nicholas Winton attended a Ceremony at the Guildhall London on Monday 23rd February where in the Chamberlains Court he was granted the Freedom of the City of London which is one of the oldest traditional ceremonies still in existence today.
The presentation of the award was made by the Chamberlain Dr Peter Kane assisted by Mr Murray Craig the Clerk of the Chamberlains Court who had proposed the grant and attended by seven members of his Court. Dr Peter Kane is only the 80th Chamberlain to hold that office in the continuous succession since 1237 which is believed to be the year the Granting of such Freedom commenced. Sir Nicholas was accompanied by his son Nick and partner Dominique his daughter Barbara and husband Stephen and grandchildren Lawrence and Holly and two local friends
The ceremony was followed by a Lunch at the end of which Sir Nicholas at the age of 105 insisted on standing to make a well received speech in acceptance of the honour in which he expressed the opinion that the world would be a better place if people rather than causing disputes on religious beliefs should simply attempt to behave towards each other in an ethical manner - with honesty and love.
