The chance to discover what lies behind the gates of some of Maidenhead’s unseen gardens is on offer during the Maidenhead Rotary Club Open Gardens Weekend on June 26-27. Tickets are now on sale for the event and each £6 entry badge (under 16s are free) gives access to more than 20 participating gardens across Maidenhead and its surrounding villages. | Open Gardens Weekend co-ordinator Janet Perry said: “Visitors will be able to visit and enjoy cottage gardens, Mediterranean gardens, formal gardens, riverside gardens, vegetable gardens, courtyard gardens, plus gardens aiming to be low maintenance and using recycled materials.” This is the first time Maidenhead Rotary Club has organised the event, which is in aid of Dementia Research and other Rotary charities, but the idea is not new. Every year across the country, gardens large and small are opened for charity. Some of the gardens will also be offering refreshments and selling plants and books. Visitors will also be able to see and buy the work of local artists, including the University of Oxford Botanic Garden Florilegium, meet some gardening experts and even learn how to make origami birds. A couple of the gardens will be hosting live music. Janet continued: “Our garden owners are keen to share their passion for gardening and meet other people who share their interest at a time when so many of us have found spending time outdoors is good for our well-being. “It’s going to be a fabulous weekend and we hope as many people as possible will come and join us.” |
The last remaining badges for the event can be purchased from Braywick Heath Nurseries in Maidenhead. A map of venues and opening times is available to download before the event.
